It’s the second day of the year and I’m still reading my Bible — not out of duty, but because I’m searching. I want to hear God. I don’t want to miss Him. But I’ve started to notice something: the more I try to listen, the louder the noise around me gets.
Sometimes that noise comes from inside — the overthinking, the “what if I miss it?” anxiety.
Other times, the noise comes in the form of people who speak with so much certainty that it feels like they’re shouting over God’s whisper. For me, one of those people is my brother. His version of “truth” comes out like a hammer (no pun intended if you read on 🫣). He once said the Avengers movie was propaganda about global warming — and that climate change isn’t real. That’s just one of many opinions he throws out like grenades in a conversation (more like debate) or in this case, when you are watching a film.
Thing is, I understand that there are films, shows and stories out there can corrupt your spiritual beliefs — absolutely. If you read Scripture and spend time in prayer, you will begin to feel when something doesn’t sit right. There are things that I no longer watch or do.
But here’s what I’m learning too:
I am starting to hear the “noise“. I am calling it noise because I am finding it hard to know when God is speaking to me — looking for signs in everything. Yet this isn’t really a good thing either — searching for signs.
Truth is, God is not competing with anyone’s volume. He’s not hiding. He’s not playing riddles with my faith.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27
I don’t need to decode every passing thought. I don’t need to argue with voices that try to dominate. I need to stay rooted. God speaks in peace, not pressure. In stillness, not in shouting matches.
So, if you’re trying to hear Him too — stay in the Word. Keep showing up and reading Scripture. You’re not falling behind just because someone else is louder. You’re learning to walk humbly. That matters more than winning debates.
And if the noise gets too loud? Step back. Protect your peace. God is still speaking. And you will recognise His voice.
End note: If it helps, set alarms throughout certain times everyday to help remind you to pray.
It takes a lifetime to learn and live by Scripture. All you need to do is pray.
